Hungary - The Hidden Gem Of Europe

Embedded between eastern and central Europe Hungary is a hidden gem when it comes to international visitors. While Budapest might be well known, the rest of the country is still a mystery for most. You might have heard about goulash, the puszta or Lake Balaton but the country offers much more than that. It has a rich history, which is showcased through the many palaces, churches, castles and synagogues all over the land. You can visit the center of the Hungarian Catholic Church in Esztergom, discover the history from the early 12th century onward at Boldogkő Castle or follow the “Footsteps of the Wonder Rabbis” and get to know the Jewish life in Hungary. If you want to take a day off you can spend the day at the largest freshwater lake in Europe or in one of the many famous Thermal Spas all over Hungary.

Buzzing Atmosphere In Budapest

The highlight of every trip to Hungary is the visit of the capital Budapest. Separated through the river Danube the city welcomes you to explore the historic part of Buda and the modern district of Pest. The most famous sight, located right on the riverbank, is the stunning Parliament Building. For a spectacular view of the architectural masterpiece and the downtown head over to the castle district with the Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church. Nestled between the residential areas of Pest you will find the former area of the Budapest ghetto, which was established during the Holocaust in the 1940s. Amidst the houses stands the Great Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe. Only a few streets over, the modern life has taken over the capital city. Along the riverbank countless restaurants, shops and attractions offer a wide variety for everyone to enjoy the buzzing atmosphere. Whether you are interested in the extensive history, the day-to-day life of modern Hungary or just a short city break – Budapest is a great city for it.

The Spectacular Local Cuisine Of Hungary

While exploring the country do not forget to indulge in the local cuisine and try some of the fantastic signature dishes. The best-known dish probably has to be the goulash, a meat stew that is popular all over central Europe but has its origin in Hungary. For a quick meal on the go try some delicious Lángos, a deep fried dough traditionally topped with sour cream and cheese or alternatively with some sausage, onion or goat cheese. If you are more of a sweet tooth try some lángos with jam or Nutella or go for a chimney cake straight from the fire with cinnamon. Similar to goulash, one of the main spices in Paprikash is, as the name suggests, paprika. Combined with onions, cream and chicken it is served with noodles and is considered the perfect comfort food for colder days. While the country might be well known for their food, Hungarian wine is something that only a handful of people know about. To your dish, you can enjoy a glass of one of the many home-produced wines or fruit brandys. So whether you decide to visit Hungary only for a weekend or a full week, you can be assured that you can enjoy the country while your needs are taken care of.
